Why there are two different limits
It looks arbitrary until you think about what is actually in each image. A photograph is a continuous range of skin tones, hair, fabric and background — millions of subtly different values that a compressor has to approximate. A signature is a few dark strokes on white paper, which stores in a fraction of the space at the same visual quality.
So portals set a generous allowance for the photograph and a tight one for the signature. Both are reasonable for what they contain. Problems start when people photograph a signature from across a desk: now most of the file is a picture of paper, lighting and shadow, and the compressor spends its budget on that instead of the strokes.
The order that works
- Crop before compressing. Both files. For the signature especially, crop until the strokes nearly touch the edges.
- Set dimensions before file size. If your form specifies pixels, that constraint comes first — file size is what you then fit inside it.
- Aim a little under the limit. If the form says "under 50KB", landing at 47KB is safer than 49.8KB. Some portals measure slightly differently to your operating system.
- Keep the originals. If an upload is rejected you will want to start again from the full-quality file, not from an already-compressed one.
Nothing is uploaded
Both files are processed in your browser using a canvas element. They are never sent to a server and nothing is stored after you leave. This matters more than usual for application documents — a photograph and a signature together are exactly the pair you would not want sitting on somebody else's server. You can verify it: load this page, disconnect from the internet, and both tools still work.
Questions
Why do photo and signature have different size limits?
A photograph carries far more detail than a signature. Portals allow more for the photo because the signature compresses much further without becoming unreadable.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Both are processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored.
My form wants one combined image. Does this make that?
No. This produces two separate files, which is what most portals ask for. If your form wants a single combined image you will need to join them before using this tool.
Which format do sarkari forms accept?
JPG is accepted almost universally and is what this tool outputs. Some portals also allow PNG, but JPG is the safe choice unless the form says otherwise.
Can I redo just one of the two files?
Yes. The two sections are independent — resize the photograph, the signature, or both, in any order.
